Garden Art!

Garden Art

Not only do I enjoy the animal aspect of rural living but I enjoy the gardening! Flowers, fruit and veggies have been a favorite theme to my art from the beginning. I will share with you some of my garden art.
You might enjoy reading a post on my other blog about farm machinery as art. You can find it here.

Hobby Farms Home Magazine & Bud Clydesdales

This face is kind of how I am feeling! :)

Yesterday was exciting. I wasn't expecting the magazine article in Hobby Farms Home on me to be out for another month. I got it in my mailbox yesterday. I wrote about it here on my other blog.

It looks like I am going to be out by the Budweiser Clydesdale painting the finishing touches on my 7 ft x 4 ft. painting on the 5th of June during First Friday. This kind of was up in the air as I am going off in a million different directions getting my studio up but the plan is for me to be at the horses painting from about 6-8:00pm. I am also having a Grand Opening in my studio so I've got someone to help there until I get done with the horses. First Fridays are always pretty manic! But its fun and this one in particular is going to be really fun.

I've got a few new commissions that I would like to get started on soon after the dust settles from all of the above. I am remembering my quiet winter days of painting for hours on end and missing being able to throw myself into the painting. I may have to go lock myself in a room in order to do that but so be it, right?? Did I mention this is my kids last week of school?? LOL!

My horses are getting fat and sleek out in the pasture. I sectioned off a portion and am doing some rotational grazing hoping to keep them from getting TOO fat! Oh and I want to ride. Really really need to ride my fat, sleek horses before they forget that they are domesticated!

take care!

Learning About Irises

Work In Progress Painting
of Van Gogh's Irises

I had someone come thru my art studio last month requesting I paint a version of Van Gogh's Irises painting for him. In my typical 'impulsive art brain disconnected from reality' fashion I said sure, no problem! And then to further demonstrate this disconnect I thought I could just whip this out in no time. LOL! First Fridays are a whirlwind of people, noise and activity which seems to put this disconnect into high gear but I am what I am, a slightly flaky artist!
It's been a good thing though to tackle this - very humbling but worthwhile. I missed out on these kinds of exercises in art school since I am self taught. I kind of imagined myself in art history and color theory classes and then being given this assignment and others after spending time learning about famous artists in depth. I am secretly jealous having missed out on a formal art education but I also know the power of being self taught and not letting missed opportunities be a reason to not pursue a dream. I just didn't know I was an artist until a few years ago. Now I know so now I am learning. (I probably wouldn't of paid as much attention in school anyways back then).

A few weeks ago when I was hanging paintings in my new place I decided I had been working too much with a particular palette. I really enjoyed my daily paintings over the winter but could see I needed to branch out now that the oils were feeling comfortable. I needed to expand my palette- move out of the winter feel to a lively summer feel. Here was the perfect opportunity to really push myself out of my comfort zone! I tend to not do as much with greens/yellows so this was a challenge and a change that has been refreshing. Adding to this the colors outside are quite intense and beautiful as the irises around here are beginning to bloom. This weekend I was at a picnic where the host had beautiful gardens and a big patch of irises. I thought of this painting, enjoyed the colors and shapes and thought how the whole world is moving me along to mix up my palette! You too?
I just wish I could see this painting in person knowing this little tiny computer print out does not have accurate colors. Its like giving a crumb to someone who is starving!
I hope you get a chance to enjoy the beauty outside today.
Take care!

More Pieces to the Bud Clydesdale Puzzle!

Sometimes I don't even know what my paintings will look like! The only thing I knew about this one was I wanted it to be big and dramatic! I am enjoying letting it evolve.. so I am not real sure where it will stop! I don't have a whole lot of time so that eliminates any fussiness which sometimes is a good thing. This needs to be completed and in my new studio for June's First Friday on June 5th.

People have told me I am brave to post WIP pics all the time. I think it is more because I am impatient! I like starting things and I like getting people interested in new things... I am not as good at maintaining in a set direction! I do like to zig zag. Ahhh, thank goodness for art. Without art the world does not appreciate zig zagging! So I zig zag to my heart's content!

I also am getting my studio space put together a little more. I will have some small, fun, animal related digital art stuff, original oil, watercolor and mixed media paintings and well a 7 ft. painting of the Budweiser Clydesdales! Price ranges are from a couple bucks on up. So hoping to have a range of things to offer. The big plus of this new studio is that the gallery downstairs is open 6 days a week so anything in my studio can be purchased during regular studio hours.

My goal is once I get pass this inital phase is to get it so I can do some painting there. Its fun for me to be at the studio and I think its fun for the people who come in to see an artist at work. So that is my goal! :) But first must finish these big boys!

Here's your next puzzle pieces.

Greener Pastures

One of my neighbors has a german shepherd dog. My other neighbor across the street has cows. The cows will come right up to the road when the dog is out front. They stand all lined up watching the dog play with its owner. Maybe they think he looks like a wolf but why come TO the dog? No one said cows are smart. I wanted a picture of them all in a row but by the time I got my camera this is the shot I got. I am calling it Greener Pastures.
You can purchase this and other digital art as well as original oil paintings at my studio or online.

My Muse! Clydesdale Painting For First Friday!

I am posting 'puzzle pieces' to my 7 ft x 4 ft. painting of the Budweiser Clydesdales coming to Canton's First Friday. It just so happens it is also the Grand Opening of my art studio White Horse Studio located above Second April Art Gallerie. So I am doubly, triple-quadriple excited! This painting may be one of my more wild ones since it seems that is the energy building up for this event!

Here are todays puzzle pieces!

To see the complete painting you have to come to the Grand Opening (or check back on this blog after the event.) I want the final paiting to be a surprise. I will be putting the finishing touches to this painting during First Friday at about 6-6:30 until 8:00 pm ish weather premitting out in the park behind the gallery where the horses will be for photo shoots.

clydesdales painting has begun....

I won't post full WIP pics of my latest painting of the Budweiser Clydesdales because I want people who come to my grand opening to be surprised. But I'll tell you about it! :)

I want this painting to be big and larger than life (metaphorically speaking since these are BIG horses!!) The board is 7 x 4 ft. I had to cut a foot off the top when I realized I wasn't going to be able to bring it inside and prop it upright because my ceilings are 8 ft tall!!

I arrived at a composition and did the sketch in chalk. I was able to block in a portion of it so we are on our way!

I thought it would be fun to show just pieces of this painting and make you guess what it will look like! So here we go:

If you are just stopping by for the first time I am getting ready for the Grand Opening of my new art studio at 324 Cleveland Ave. NW #207, Canton, Ohio above Second April Art Gallery. The Budweiser Clydesdales are coming for June's First Friday which just happens to be when my Grand Opening is! So I am celebrating by painting a large, colorful 7 ft by 4 ft. painting of these beautiful horses. What else is an equine artist to do? :)
Thanks for stopping by!

The Budweiser Clydesdales Come to Canton!

THE WORLD-FAMOUS BUDWEISER CLYDESDALES
MAKE A STOP IN CANTON, OHIO

The Clydesdales are coming to Canton, Ohio. They’re bringing their state-of-the art trailers, their expertly trained handlers, their 1903 Studebaker beer wagon and their unmistakable beauty and charm to the downtown arts celebration known as First Friday, on Friday, June 5 from 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. in the downtown Canton Arts District.
Rock stars of the equestrian world; the Budweiser Clydesdales are transported in style and cause a sensation of delight wherever they travel. This is more than 100,000 miles a year, throughout the United States and away from their home in St. Louis, Missouri. Their June 5 stop in Canton, Ohio is made possible through the Downtown Special Improvement District and ArtsinStark, the county arts council.
With origins in Scotland, it was the breed’s hauling power and confident style that attracted North Americans to the Clydesdale. In fact, in the early days of brewing, it was said that a brewer’s success was directly related to how far his draft horses could pull a load in one day. Thus, the Clydesdales became the natural icon for the “king of beers.”
But not every Clydesdale can make the cut.
To qualify for the world-famous, eight-horse hitch, a Budweiser Clydesdale must stand 18 hands high (about 6 feet) at the shoulder when fully mature, and weight approximately 2,000 pounds. They must be geldings, bay in color, have four white stockings and a blaze of white on the face, as well as a black mane and tail. A gentle temperament also is important, as hitch horses meet millions of people each year. And, they often have a short name, like Duke, Captain, Mark. And of course, Bud.
The Budweiser Clydesdales and their own mascot Dalmatian will be travel through the Arts District delivering kegs to downtown restaurants beginning at 5:30 p.m. Following that from 6:30-8:00 p.m., they will be hitched to their wagon in the Kresge green space, at the corner of Market Avenue North and Fourth Street N for photos with the public and posing for a live painting demonstration by Sue Steiner of White Horse Studio (http://www.suesteiner.com/). Steiner’s studio at Second April Galerie (324 Cleveland Ave NW) will feature equine art this month. Artist Kelli Swan, whose work was featured as a limited edition print in the official 2009 Kentucky Derby celebration, will show her graphite equine artworks at the Ohio Arts and Crafts Guild (338 4th St. NW, Canton). See more at http://www.pencilplace.com/
First Friday is a celebration of live music, local art, downtown dining and more -- sponsored by the Downtown Canton Special Improvement District in cooperation with ArtsinStark, the County Arts Council. For more information, please visit http://www.cantonfirstfriday.com/

Cant' wait! Hope to see you there!

Ahhh, got my Painting Fix!!

Too many days have gone by since I got to paint like I did today! This was fun! I made a mess-- paint everywhere.... I think at one point I may have sat on a paint tube. But it was worth it. I got my painting fix and I feel MUCH better! :)

This is big-- maybe 24 x 24 ? Something like that. It will be at my studio in time for First Friday. I want to go back and add more lights when it dries. I just could not get the yellows light enough... that may have had to do with all the paint flying around everywhere-- couldn't keep the yellows 'clean'. Oh well, I will have more restraint now that I got to play! :)

Pop Art Chickens

I am still in painting withdrawal here as I continue to get my studio space, White Horse Studio ready to work in. I am gearing up for the 'Grand Opening' on June 5th which will coincide with June's First Friday. I mentioned before the Budweiser Clydesdales will be there so I am very excited about that. My hope was to do a painting of the team ... I guess I can still hope that I will have time to do that at this point!

I printed off some pop art chickens that I will be selling on my etsy shop and in my studio. I made these from my original artwork and altered with photoshop. Its fun... but not the same as brush to canvas! My goal this year was to paint, paint paint and not get too bogged down with all the other stuff that draws me away from painting so I am going to remind myself of this goal frequently as soon as I get thru this inital setting up of my new space.

I am closing down this computer and heading to my easle..... must ease that painting ache! :)

To see finished work stop by my studio or my web site.

Oh, one more thing.... I will be offering an 'upgrade' coupon also to people coming by my new studio for the Grand Opening. If you are out of town you can e-mail me at artbysue@hotmail.com and mention the coupon. As long as I recieve the e-mail during the month of May or June you can use the coupon at any time this year. The coupon allows you to pay for one size pet or horse portrait and bump it up to the next larger size at no extra cost.

Thanks!

Prized Herd Sire Commission

I have been working on this commission for a little bit now. I had to put it aside during the move to my new studio. I was at the point where I needed to do the detail work and moving makes me too frazzled to do this delicate stuff. I need quiet. Today I was able to get back to work on it and had a very good painting session. I told my client I am heading into the homestretch now with this!

One of the things I have really enjoyed about this painting is the muscles and bulk of this bull. I enjoy the anatomy of the animals. One thing you learn caring for animals and especially large animals is to be observant of their habits and body language. I have a horse who is quite stoic who a few years ago was beginning to colic but hardly let on. Luckily we noticed the subtle differences and got her taken care of with no problems. That was a good lesson to me to really be on the ball for the little ways in which animals let on what is going on with them.

I have a couple new commissions I will be working on when this is finished that I am eager to share with you. I also will be celebrating the Grand Opening of my art studio, White Horse Studio during June's First Friday. Rumor has it that the Budweiser Clydesdales will be there so I want to get a painting of them done in time too. Gotta get busy!!!

Horses at Liberty Photos

Best Buds

mother and son

almost the whole group

I will say this up front.... I am going thru painting withdrawal. I spent the last couple weeks concentrating on getting my new studio in Canton 'White Horse Studio' opened and ready for First Friday. I spent the past weekend pulling my house back together and am in dire need of some big chunks of painting time. Many of you may know I took in a rescue last week too so that coupled with my kids ball games starting up all adds up to not too many big chunks of time! :) Today I am at my studio to re tape an interview I gave a couple weeks ago. Tonight is another ball game.... Tomorrow is blocked off and set aside so I can 1. finish a commission so I can get started on some new ones 2. restore my sanity! :) I paint first and foremost because of number 2. I love taking commissions, getting my studio together, writing blogs and marketing my art. I love taking in rescues when I can but I NEED to paint. Okay, I am addicted. There I said it! It just plain feels good to paint and I am missing the good endorphins that come with painting.

I am sharing with you today some pictures I took yesterday of my 'herd'. I am getting some reference material for an upcoming art exhibit I am participating in titled 'Animal Instincts'. An interesting thing is happening with my new rescue horse from an equine artist perspective. As she is recovering I am watching the changes in her body. She is still so lean and since her winter coat came out in chunks due to rain rot you can really see her musculature and bone structure as she begins to have muscle again. I remember watching this happen with my other arab who came to me so very thin. Its kind of interesting to watch it happen because at this stage there is so much definition it helps in painting when you understand the underlying body structure. I of course would never purposefully put a horse thru this but since this is a stage she is going thru as she recovers I am enjoying watching the changes since it is a positive change.

New Spaces, New Beginnings!

White Horse Studios

Art By Sue Steiner

White Horse Studio located on the second floor of Second April Art Gallery is officially up and running! Last night was the kick off of May First Friday and the beginning of me being in my new art studio. The crowd was out and about in spite of the rain and I got my new space pulled together just in time!

The other new beginning is the one happening on the home front as my boomerang rescue horse is getting settled in and adjusted to her new space. I will give you some highlights of the past week. Since I am an artist I thought rather than tell the story in words I would let these images tell a visual story.

Apprehension

Hope

Friends are Good!

Trust is Hard

Building a Support Network

Thats all for now! :)
She's doing well. I see changes in her daily as far as body condition and general over all well being. Trust will need to be built but I am not in a hurry. That part of the rescue process is fun with a horse like boomer because she is smart, smart, smart and ever so sensitive so she keeps me on my toes as I think of ways to help the process along without apply pressure or making her feel insecure.
