Let the Sun Shine In!

We had spring like weather today with this beautiful, warm sun! I've been doing some unpleasant tasks like getting my records ready for taxes so I welcomed the distraction of this beautiful flower that is opening up in this sunlight.
I have plans to start working on a couple new equine paintings as soon as I get my taxes ready! Look for a Black Shire and a chestnut Thoroughbred wok in progress paintings soon.

Promise of Spring in the Air

I am in from my morning chores. One of my favorite chores is the handling and feeding of my colt, Ricco. He's been out with the herd but since his feed requirements are higher than the rest of my group I single him out to make sure he gets what he needs. This also becomes a good time to do some handling. The feed becomes his reward and he is responding very well. Today while he munched on his grain I held the bucket for him and had time to just stand and feel the sun's rays on our backs. The air is cold, the ground still hard and frozen but the sun felt warm. Ahhhhh. The promise of spring was told to us as we felt the warmth. I listened to the birds sing anticipating spring and all the newness, freshness, hope that comes along with it.

I will leave you today with a tulip I did a few months ago. This is a watercolor/mixed media piece and will be offered for sale at my Open Studio during Canton's First Friday on March 6th. I am in my Canton studio every First Friday in suite #222 above Second April Art Gallerie on the corner of 4th and Cleveland Ave. If you come in the door by Arcardia Grill I am at the top of the stairs. Stop in and see my floral watercolor art along with animal and equine art. I am also available for pet portraits in oils or watercolors.

'Baby Face' foal painting work in progress

horse portrait in oils, work in progress

It feels good to be back in the studio painting instead of organizing, cleaning and moving furniture. I'm enjoying the clean space but have missed painting SO much. I wonder now how I managed stress just 5 years ago before I painted? For me painting is such a wonderful stress reliever I am thankful to have found it.

I am enjoying this foal painting ... my colt is 7 months old now and is losing the baby look and is taking on the lanky look of a yearling. My colt Ricco has a wonderful temperment, of which I am so grateful for because he is getting big next to my petite arabs. Ricco is out of my tb mare and the amish neighbor's beautiful Dutch carriage horse so I think technically he is a warmblood cross even though Amish don't go thru registries or anything like that. I got to imprint Ricco at birth and I am certain that got us off to a wonderful start. One of my favorite things to do with him-- and all my horses is to pet their foreheads between their eyes. My horses all loved to be brushed there too. They lower their heads and just relax and give me big sighs. Or show me where to direct my brush to get their itchy places! While painting this foal I am enjoying the hair swirls on his forehead as it reminds me of this special activity with my own horses.

Photo Shoot

I spent the day today with Jodi Miller, a Columbus based free lance photogragher. She met with me at Hobby Farms Magazine's request to take photos that will go along with an article featuring my equine and animal art. In the photo above Jodi is taking some photos of me by my Amish Work Horse Hitching Post mural at Lehman's that I completed last year. If you are in the Kidron area be sure to stop in the Buggy Barn at Lehman's to see the murals. Jodi also spent time on my farm photographing my horses, farm and home studio. Look for the article in the July/Aug issue!

Photo Shoot for Hobby Farms Home Magazine

I am preparing for a photo shoot with a photographer from Hobby Farms Home magazine. She is coming into town tomorrow weather permitting. The plan is for her to photogragh my barn, my horses, my art studio and then visit my murals at Lehman's for an article that will be in the magazine in the July/Aug. edition featuring my farm animal art. I am really excited about it. The magazine is a favorite of mine with beautiful photography and interesting articles right in line with my interests- gardening, small scale family farming, horses, country lifestyle and family.

We had beautiful weather at the beginning of the week- clear, warm, almost spring like but today winter is back. I suppose its to be expected in Feb. in Ohio!

After I finish writing this blog entry I am heading to my studio to work a little more on my 'Baby Face' foal painting. There is a possiblity that I will be doing a video as well so we'll see how the day goes. Maybe this painting will be in the video as a work in progress?
I do wish this snow would blow away and the sun come out!!! Spring, we are ready anytime!!!
Take care!

Clear Crisp Morning

Yesterday we got a very welcome break from winter. I took my camera out with me when I headed to the barn to feed horses. The sky was crystal clear, the hard frost from the night before still clung to the branches and fences creating this wonderful, lacy effect. I'll share with you some of the beautiful views around my house and pasture.

The photo of the paint is my amish neighbors farm. I always laugh when my horses gather at the fence and their horses gather at their fence just to stare at each other a while! Yesterday though hunger beat out socializing as everyone was intent on the promise of green grass in the not too distant future.

As many of you know I am an artist who specializes in equine and animal art. The last couple years I have been adding to my farm animal murals at Lehman's in Kidron, Ohio. My murals can be seen on my web site at http://www.suesteiner.com/ During the time I began this project I met with an editor of Hobby Farms magazine. She saw my work and mentioned the magazine would like to do a write up on my farm animal art and art business and how it relates to my farming background. This Friday I am doing a phone interview for the Hobby Farm Home magazine and am told the article will be in the July/Aug issue. If you are not familiar with the magazine please stop by their web site and take a look. The articles are informative and the layout and photography is very attractive. Its a well put together magazine with the focus on gardening, livestock, small farms and farm based family businesses. For instance this month's issue features articles on bread and butter making, fiber arts and knitting, recipes from your garden, living 'green' and product recommendations.
I'll write more as I learn more but wanted to share the news with you.
In addition to farm animals and equine art I am available for pet commissions. I can be reached by e-mail at artbysue@hotmail.com or you can read about commssioning a pet portrait at http://www.suesteiner.com/mbr_purchase.php

Cat Commission 'Ying and Yang'

9 x 12 commissioned pet portrait in watercolor and pen and ink.

I painted this cat duo in wateroclor and pen and ink today. I stepped away from my oils and played with the watercolors for a change of pace! What fun! I hope you enjoy todays painting!

I offer watercolor as another option for people wanting to commission pet portraits. They have a different feel to them which can be so expressive! Watercolors can be completed in less time than the oils and therefore are less expensive. These types of portraits actually take quite a bit of restraint because what I find is I want to keep painting but the beauty often is in the clean lines and the suggestion rather than giving the viewer the whole story. I painted a couple versions before I arrived at what you see here as I refined what I needed to say and I kept the focus on the cats faces and the peacefulness of the pose.

If you are interested in commissioning me for a pet or horse portrait please e-mail me at artbysue@hotmail.com or stop by my web site at http://www.suesteiner.com/ and see more completed work and read about how to commission me for an original, one of a kind portrait of your own!

This week I will be in my Canton art studio during First Friday from 6:00- 10:00 pm. You can find me at 318 Cleveland Ave. Suite #222 on the second floor above Second April Art Gallerie in the Annex. You can come in thru the entrance by Arcadia Grille also. I am right at the top of the steps.

Thank you!
